About Allen Township Zoning
Ohio Revised Code Chapter 519, enacted in 1947, granted townships the authority to adopt zoning resolutions through a vote of township residents. This legislation established township-level zoning across the state, allowing communities to guide development based on local needs.
Union County townships adopted zoning independently rather than through a county-wide mandate. Some townships, such as Jerome Township, adopted zoning early—likely in the 1950s or 1960s—in response to suburban growth pressures from nearby Columbus. Other townships, including Millcreek, Paris, and Liberty, adopted zoning at different times based on infrastructure needs, growth patterns, and land use concerns.
Allen Township officially adopted its zoning resolution in 1972.
